Gigha Community Energy Project
The wind turbine project on the community-owned island of Gigha is one of Good Energy’s most recent partners.
The Isle of Gigha in the Hebrides is a ground breaking community. They are the first community in Scotland to develop and own a grid connected wind farm. The three turbines known as ‘The dancing ladies’ are providing electricity and an income for the island with Good Energy now paying Gigha Renewable Energy Ltd for their generation. The project’s robust financial model can be replicated by communities throughout Scotland – Gigha’s ‘Dancing ladies’ have led the way and the islanders are confident many more community wind farms will follow.
“Until recently the Isle of Gigha was in decline with a dwindling population and economy. When Gigha’s community bought the island, we realised we needed to develop in a sustainable way and that is what our three “Dancing Ladies” are helping us to do. Our three wind turbines generate electricity and an income for the community and they help to protect one of the island’s greatest assets – our environment. Gigha’s community is small but we are making a difference. If every community acts on climate change then we can solve it. “
